Who am I?
My name is Steven Sperling and I am a vice president of Cong. B’nai Moshe. Those are the first words that I pronounce when I give the announcements on the Bimah. Now I can proudly announce that I am Steven Sperling your new President of Cong. B’nai Moshe for the next two years. I am a link from a long line of Presidents of the past to the future.
Some of you may wonder who I am. You have seen me on the Bimah during Shabbat services and at the many functions that my family and I attended during the past years. I would like to introduce myself as a Conservative Jew, who wants to leave a legacy of a long future for our synagogue.
I have been married to my lovely wife Heather for forty-three years and have three children, Daniel, Mindy and Megan. We also have six Grandchildren. Daniel and his wife Lisa have been members for over 10 years. My daughter Mindy and her husband Michael and their two daughters Cara and Abby are former members who moved to Weston, Florida 2-1/2 years ago. I have four grandchildren enrolled in the L.I.F.E. program, Joshua, Jenna, Shane and Devin.
Two of my three siblings are also members of our Shul, Joyce and Donald Sherman and Lorrie and Jon Isenberg. My brother Mark and his family lives in Indiana and are active in their Conservative Synagogue. I also have a niece and nephew who are members with their families. That sums up the family membership.
I was a member of Beth Achim for over 25 years. I was not an active member due to the fact that I owned and managed a tool & die company and worked an average 60 hours a week for over 30 years. (I guess you can say that I would be classified as an A- type.) I have been on the executive board of the Oakland March of Dimes. I was on the committee that formulated and built the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital in Detroit. I was secretary of the Men’s Council for Metropolitan B’nai Birth and past president of my B’nai Brith lodge. In my youth I was president of my AZA chapter.
I sold my Company and retired in 1998. Since that time I work part-time as a consultant for an accountant and attorney. I am also president and treasurer for Mission Springs Subdivision for the last four years.
Fast forwarding to the last few years of my activities at our shul. I am a regular at Shabbat services and attend minyan a couple times a week. I work regularly with the synagogue bookkeeper overseeing our finances. I am liaison to the following committees; Budget/Finance/Investment, House, Dor L’Dor, Major Fund Raising, and Personnel. I was the chairman for this year’s Annual Campaign. Last year as Budget Chairman, I prepared our annual budget. This year I am working closely with the current Budget Chairman. I was also Chairman of the Sunday event for our Cantor’s 10th Anniversary Weekend.
I hope with this introduction many of you can feel that you know me better and that during my term of office that I can get to know many of you better.
Last of all, I want to thank Dennis Deutsch, our immediate part president, for mentoring me, listening to me and giving me advice these past years.
