HOW TO SEARCH LIBRARY CATALOG USING "QUICK SEARCH"
"Quick Search" is the default search made available when you open the library catalog. Within quick search you can select what type of search you want to do from four choices. The default choice is Keyword/Phrase, but it may not be the best choice if you know the title or author you want to look for. The list of titles that display from any of these searches will tell you the shelf location of the item and whether or not it is available for circulation. Clicking on a title in the list will bring you to the complete record for that item.
Type the title in the search box: click the circle to the left of the word title to put a black dot in it, and then click SEARCH. You will get a list of titles that include the words you typed in the order that you typed them that are found in the title field of the record. The exact title may not be the first one in the list, so be sure to scroll through the list. You can also search for a title using the Keyword/Phrase default, but your resulting list may be longer.
Type the author's name (last name first, then the first name, separated by a comma e.g. Wiesel. Elie): click the circle to the left of the word author to put a black dot in it. and then click SEARCH. You will get a list of titles that are by that author or show that author as a joint author. You can also search for an author using the Keyword/Phrase default.
Type the subject you wish to look for (use one word, e.g. Holocaust); click the circle to the left of the word subject to put a black dot in it, and then click SEARCH. You will get a list of all of the titles found in the catalog that include that word in a subject field.
Keyword/Phrase quick search:
Type in the word or phrase that you are looking for in the search box; click the circle to the left of the word Keyword to put a black dot in it, and then click SEARCH. Note this search method can be tricky! I believe it should be called Keyword OR Phrase quick search. If you type in one single word you will get a list of titles that include the word if it is found anywhere in the record. This can be a long list to scroll through. If you type a phrase (more than one word) it will display all the titles that have those words found in the same order as they are typed that are together in any one field of the record. An author's name will display no matter how it is typed since it appears both ways in a record in different fields. But, it does not cross fields when it selects titles to display and it does not find titles if the order of the words is not correct and they are not next to each other in the record. So, even if the words you typed are all found in the record, the search might not display the title. You cannot combine part of an author's name with a word from a title in Quick search. For those cross field searches you need to use "Advanced Search".
