Every new advancement in technology brings with it the possibility of danger. The
airplane and the automobile are essential for keeping families in close contact, and in
enabling us to expand our opportunities in the business world. Yet, we too frequently
read about the tragedies of fatal accidents. Similar discussions surround the pros and cons
of the internet, the so called information superhighway. As productive a communication
and education tool it is, we worry about the sex offenders and messengers of hate who run
rampant.
It is our duty to remember, and help others remember, the goodness which emerges from
technological advances. Let’s not be afraid of the internet, but rather embrace its
contribution to our lives.
As Jews, we are especially blessed to have a friend in our desktop computers. Here are
just a few of the websites which I frequently visit:
Click on Judaism and Jewish Resources
for an excellent and
well organized source for everything you could ever imagine pertaining to Judaism. You
won’t believe how extensive this list is. Among the many things I have found on this list is
the Kosher Restaurant Database
which has been very helpful during travel.
Metro Detroit’s Jewish Web
-- the content is self
explanatory.
To learn more about Conservative Judaism, see
The Jewish Theological Seminary
and The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.
Especially
helpful are the Seminary’s opporunities for online learning and Chancellor Schorsch’s
weekly Torah commentary. At United Synagogue be sure to register to participate in
Perek Yomi, the daily study of the bible.
The Jerusalem Post, Israel’s major English language newspaper, publishes a
daily online version. You will be able to find many other Jewish newspapers and
periodicals on the web, but I would recommend checking this one out.
For expanding the Jewish use of your computer, see
Davka,
which is a leading retailer of Judaic software. If you own a palm pilot
you should visit
Penticon.com, which offers Hebrew and a Jewish calendar.
I’m sure you have your own favorite Jewish internet sites.
