HOW TO SEARCH LIBRARY CATALOG USING "ADVANCED SEARCH"

Advanced search allows you to expand the details of your search to zero in on the exact material you are looking for. Advanced search features the following:

  1. Three search boxes in which you can insert a word or a phrase for which to search. Remember that within each of these search boxes the words that make up the phrase must be in the correct order and within one field just like in Quick Search.

  2. Connector words: Under each search box you will see three possible connector words "and", "or", "not". You need to connect the two search boxes with one of those words. So in advanced search you can type in one word of a title in one box, connect it with "and" and the author's last name in another box. When you click Search it will search for both words and display the exact item you want. All three search boxes can be utilized at one time and you can use whichever connector word is appropriate to connect them.

  3. Select which field to search: To the right of each search box is a drop down menu that you can use to select which field to search. If the word is found in the title, select title, if it is an author's name, select author. If you know the publisher, you can select publisher, or just leave it on keyword, and it will search the whole record.

  4. Browse option: To the right of the drop down menu, each search box has a "Browse" button associated with it. The browse button only works for the box to which it is tied. It allows you to see the list of correct subject headings that include the word you are searching. From that list you can select the subject heading that best describes what you are looking for. When you select it, the subject heading is placed in the search box. Once it is in the search box, click Search and all the titles that have that subject heading associated with it will be displayed. For example, if you browse the word Holocaust, a list of subject headings will appear that include it. You can then narrow the search by selecting the actual subject heading that best describes your need, such as personal narratives, or adding a place name, such as Hungary, France etc. This is a good way to look for titles on a particular subject.

  5. Location box: You can ignore this because there is only one location possible, the B'nai Moshe Library.

  6. Copy Type drop down box: Every item in the catalog has been assigned a copy type. The ones that will be most helpful to you are:
    • Book – Adult books
    • JBook – children's books
    • Audiobk – books on tape
    • Video Cassette
    • Other copy types are there for other kinds of media.

This is a handy way to narrow your search. For example, if you are only looking for children's books on a holiday, enter the holiday name in the search box and select JBook from the copy type and the search will only bring up Juvenile titles.

  7. Search Button: The "Search" button is found at the bottom of the screen and is used to activate the search. It always brings up a list of titles.

  8. Clear All: This button is found to the right of the search button and clears all the information out of all the boxes so you can start a new search from scratch.
